# Reading a machine fossil

Every Tomorrow's Fossils specimen is built in the same order: strata first, mechanism second, story last.

Strata first: the stone matrix is designed as real sedimentary structure, so whatever it holds inherits its conviction. Mechanism second: every visible part must have a plausible job; part seams land on mechanical joints. Story last: the discovery record may only claim what the object shows.

Practical consequence for painters: the two-material read (stone vs machine) is baked into the geometry — warm grey drybrush on the matrix, restrained metallics on the mechanism, one amber accent where something still runs.
